Writer, plant nut
Helen Billiald is a garden writer living in Somerset.
Her early obsession with the natural world led to a biology degree and masters in biological control at Imperial College London, followed by a PhD in ecology at Sussex University and Forest Research.
In 2005 she swapped scientific research for journalism and worked as a staff writer on the weekly newspaper Garden News and the monthly magazine Garden Answers.
In 2006 she received the ‘New Writer Award’ from the Garden Media Guild.
From 2008 to 2012 Helen was based in Perth where she wrote for the SPICE program at the University of Western Australia.
She returned to England in 2012 and writes regularly for Garden Answers including Grow and Eat features, Garden Heroes and a Garden Diary.
When not at her desk she spends as much time as possible exploring Somerset and attempting to bring the garden and two children under control.
